Using your water wiselyConservation:
Using your water wisely

We’re lucky! Unlike many areas of the country, Monroe County has more than enough water to satisfy current and future needs. Our water source, Lake Ontario, and the other Great Lakes contain 20% of the world’s fresh water!

Of course, we still need to use water wisely. You can help save thousands of gallons of water every year. How?

  • Fix leaky faucets.
  • Replace washers when garden hoses start to drip.
  • Use a bucket of soapy water to wash the car.
  • Use a hose with a trigger nozzle (that shuts off automatically).
  • Keep a container of drinking water in the refrigerator instead of running the tap for cold water.
And. . .

Beat the summertime peak!

Summer water usage creates “peak demand” hours when consumers use five times as much water as during average demand hours. You can help “beat the peak” by spreading your water usage over the whole day, instead of just a few evening hours. Follow these simple tips:
spreading your water usage over the whole day.

  • Water your lawn only when necessary. If the grass springs back up when you walk on it, it doesn’t need watering.
  • Save time and money by watering your lawn early in the morning. After 10 a.m. the sun’s heat draws water from the lawn through evaporation. When you water early, you can water less because more of the water is absorbed into the lawn.
  • Don’t “sprinkle”. Grass needs deep watering that gets to the roots. Watering well allows you to water less often. An added bonus: lawns with deep root growth are more drought resistant.
  • Don’t water the driveway! Position your sprinkler to water just the grass.
  • Remember to turn off the sprinkler. Use a kitchen timer to remind you to turn off the water unless you have an automatic system.
  • Fill the swimming pool during the night or very early in the morning when water usage is lower.

Fact
A water molecule stays in the ocean for 98 years, in ice for 20 months, in lakes and rivers for 2 weeks, and in the atmosphere for less than 7 days.
