Hamlin Water Mains

Overview

The Water Authority is constantly working to improve the reliability of our water system. In that endeavor, new 8" water mains will be installed at three locations in the Town of Hamlin:

  • Drake Road (County Road 252) and Roosevelt Highway (NYS Route 18),
  • Sweden Walker Road (NYS Route 260) and Roosevelt Highway (NYS Route 18) and
  • Lake Road West Fork (County Road 234) near Sandy Creek

A total of four road crossings will be made, eliminating dead-end water mains. The road crossings will be made utilizing the directional drilling method of installation so no trenching will be required in the road pavement.

Once the main is installed, it is pressure tested to check for leaks. If any leaks are found, they are corrected. Then the main is flushed and disinfected. Health samples are taken for testing by the Department of Health. After the main has successfully passed all tests, service connections are transferred from the old main to the new main.

During final restoration, disturbed areas are restored to their preconstruction condition. Temporary asphalt is removed, and permanent asphalt is installed in paved areas. Lawn areas are graded and seeded and the contractor is responsible for proper regrowth.

Schedule

The schedule depends on a number of factors, but we anticipate our contractor starting work in early May and completing work at the end of July. Final restoration will be done by the end of September.

A Water Authority inspector will be onsite throughout construction. Our inspectors carry an ID card and drive a company vehicle with a Water Authority logo on it. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What determines replacement, relocation or relining of water mains?
A: Evaluation is primarily based on pipe age, the occurrence of breaks and repairs, and future hydraulic considerations.

Q: Will our water services need to be repaired?
A: The Water Authority is typically responsible for the portion of each building's water service that is in the public right-of-way or water main easement, up to and including the curb stop. The Water Authority will replace its portion of your service line and the curb stop during the project if needed.

Q: What depth are the new pipes buried?
A: Unless there are conflicts with other utilities, the new pipes will be installed approximately 5' deep.

Q: Will I have water service during the project?
A: If the water main that serves your home is being replaced, you will be notified in advance of any non-emergency service outages. Service to homes is temporarily shut down during installation of new service connections to the curb stop and during tie-in connections at the end of the water main installation.

Q: Will there be open trenches at night?
A: No, the site must be left in a safe manner by the contractor and trenches will be protected with orange construction fencing.

Q: Is  the contractor penalized if the project is not completed on time?
A: Yes, there are provisions in the contract to ensure the project is completed in a timely manner.

Q: Will damage to my lawn be repaired?
A: Yes, lawn areas are graded and seeded and the contractor is responsible for proper regrowth.
